What Is WUE?
WUE (Water Usage Effectiveness) is by definition a metric used to measure a data center's water consumption. Developed by The Green Grid, WUE is used today to evaluate the impact of cooling systems on water consumption in data centers. It serves as a decision-making metric to compare different infrastructures or track progress in water resource management.
WUE relies on a simple ratio. The formula compares the volume of water consumed over a given period to the electricity consumed by IT equipment. The lower the resulting value, the more optimized the water usage is.
As a guide, a WUE between 0 and 0.2 L/kWh is generally considered a sign of very low water consumption. However, there is no universal threshold: WUE must always be interpreted in light of climate conditions, cooling technologies used, and operational constraints specific to each data center.
Why Is WUE Important in a Data Center?
As a hosting provider, average water consumption is a critical issue. Certain cooling systems rely on water to dissipate the heat generated by servers. At a time when several regions worldwide face water stress, measuring WUE allows operators to know their actual water usage, adjust consumption profiles, and adapt cooling system choices.
However, this metric should not be analyzed in isolation. It complements other metrics such as PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness), dedicated to energy efficiency, or CUE (Carbon Usage Effectiveness), which measures carbon emissions related to data center operation. Together, these indicators provide a comprehensive view of an infrastructure's environmental performance.
How Should WUE Be Interpreted?
By way of comparison, two data centers might display a similar PUE while ultimately having very different WUE values depending on the cooling technologies deployed. Values depend on numerous parameters: cooling technology, climatic conditions, data center location, and implemented water management strategies.
